Jack Finnerty

Name: Jack Finnerty

Title: Director

Organization: Scranton Public Library

Area of Employment: library

How I heard about Universal Service: Pennsylvania: personal e-mail message

My experience in this area:

I have been involved with public libraries in Pennsylvania for for more than 25 years - the last ten years as Director of Scranton Public Library. During this time I have witnessed many technological revolutions; e.g., the advent of audio visual services and development of media collections, the rise of microfilm, microfiche and now digitized information storage technologies, and most importantly the widespread conversion of library databases to machine readable formats. I believe that while the mission of the public library remains unchanged, the tools for accomplishing that mission have continually changed to reflect evolving technologies. To be effective and viable today, the public library must be "connected."

What I hope to learn:

I hope to learn how to most effectively utilize the opportunities afforded by the new telecommunications act, in providing Internet access to public library patrons here and throughout the Commonwealth.
