My name is Rashidah Hakeem and I am co-moderator for Community
Networking. I work at LeMoyne-Owen College, an urban campus in Memphis,
TN located across the street from LeMoyne Gardens Public Housing
Project. I am the curriculum developer and teacher for the MECCA
Educational Initiative which sponsors a program of computer literacy with
internet access at the college to adult and children residents of the
housing project. Students are recruited through a number of social
service agencies and community organizations that also provide a variety
of services to LeMoyne Gardens residents.
The importance of networking in this project cannot be overstated
because we depend almost solely on networking with agencies and
organizations in recruiting students for our program. The computer
literacy instruction is tailored to reflect the goals or service
interests of the sponsoring agency or organization.
The project was initiated in April , 1995 with ten computers and one
staff person. The classroom is a shared academic computing lab with a
movable partition which is closed during MECCA sessions.
