Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh: History 1895 - 1969

Preface

This history of the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh was compiled for staff use. It is hoped that it will (1) give staff members some idea of the steps by which the Library has reached its present stage of development--through two world wars, the Great Depression, and several recessions, and (2) aid in locating names, dates and other historical data.
The Library's printed annual reports are less comprehensive than an historian would wish, but they were used almost exclusively for facts, with only occasional recourse to correspondence and other original sources.
