What if there were enough money so that every voter could spend some to support a candidate? That way every voter would have some power as well as a vote. Bruce Ackerman, law professor at Yale has proposed that the government provide everyone with $50 to spend (a voucher). The money could go to a candidate, a party,or or some other advocacy group. The idea is to give everyone a monetary stake in the system, supplementing the vote. Would that increase trust? Would it make elections more interesting? get more people involved?
I find the idea intriguing. If we can't get money out of the system, why not distribute it in such a way as to make it a means of reforming election politics. What do you think?
