I also hope candidates speak the truth, but who decides want is true? The Sedition Act of 1798 made allowances for the "truth." Actually, before the Act, truth was not a defense in a libel trial.
James Madison and Thomas Jefferson both objected to the Sedition Act. They believed it violated the First Amendment. Nevertheless, if what a person said was "true" he could not be convicted of the violating the Act.
Do we want to have a committee to determine "truth"?
