Mary Tobias Weaver

Mary Tobias Weaver, Assistant Superintendent for the Education Support Systems Division in the California Department of Education (CDE), has statewide programmatic responsibility for K-12 adult programs, including specialized programs in the Offices of Adult Education, Counseling and Student Support, Educational Options, and Safe Schools and Violence Prevention. Specific programmatic responsibilities include adult programs funded by the Adult Education and Family Literacy Act that relate to adult basic education, English-as-a-Second Language, and English Literacy and Civics Education.

Ms. Weaver has worked for CDE for the past 22 years in a variety of capacities. Approximately three years ago Ms. Weaver assumed the responsibilities for the Adult Education Program as the Assistant Superintendent of the Education Support Systems Division. Two years ago she took on the challenging role of State Director of Adult Education.

Ms. Weaver is a strong advocate for mentoring roles in which adults work closely with youth and their families to bridge educational barriers. She also is a strong advocate for alternative options for students to meet the standards established for a sound education.

Ms. Weaver obtained her Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of California, Santa Barbara, with a home economics major and political science minor. Her Masters of Science degree is in Consumer Science, an experimental graduate degree that included program emphasis in economics, agricultural economics, consumer studies, and law. She has life credentials in secondary teaching and K-12 administration. She taught courses in junior high school home economics and UC Davis teacher education. She was a career guidance project director in a high school guidance grant program prior to joining CDE.
